The Total Economic Impact™ Of The Intel vPro® Platform As An Endpoint Standard: Spotlight On China

Intel commissioned Forrester Consulting to interview seven representatives from five organizations and survey 500 respondents and conduct a Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study to better understand the benefits, costs, and risks associated with using the Intel vPro platform as an endpoint standard.1

This abstract will focus on Chinese institutions’ use of Intel vPro and its value to their organizations as their endpoint standard. This has been reported by 50 IT survey respondents located in China whose organizations use Intel vPro as their endpoint standard for Windows devices. In addition, Forrester conducted an interview with a representative of an airline who operates in China as a part of this analysis.

IT decision-makers in China are responsible for many demanding priorities. They need to empower employees to be as productive as possible, even when employees operate remotely or in diverse environments. They also must avoid overloading their IT teams and allow them to remain nimble and capable of responding to new events and priorities. Finally, they are responsible for protecting their organization and employees by ensuring technology is secure and data is safe.

Intel vPro helps with these priorities through business-class hardware that limits disruptions; remote management capabilities that allow for careful control across environments; automated and scalable features that save IT groups time and reduce manual labor; and built-in, hardware-enabled security that provides protection below the OS.

When applied to a composite organization, these attributes drive benefits of $4.32 million over three years versus costs of $1.38 million, adding up to a net present value (NPV) of $2.94 million and an ROI of 213%.

INVESTMENT DRIVERS For Chinese Organizations

The Chinese survey respondents and interviewees noted their organizations adopted Intel vPro to optimize their workforce experience for their frontline workers. These organizations struggled with several challenges in their legacy environments, including:

  • Empowering end-user productivity. The most common priority for surveyed IT decision-makers in China was to improve employee performance and productivity. Devices built on the Intel vPro platform are part of the Intel® Stable IT Platform Program (Intel SIPP), meaning that extra validation is performed to ensure these PCs are built for employee performance in the long run. This validation extends beyond the CPU and includes the chipset, network interface card (NIC), graphics, and other hardware components. This allows IT teams not to worry about their organization’s corporate image breaking from one purchase to the next.
  • Supporting remote and hybrid workers. IT leaders saw the opportunity to use Intel vPro technologies, such as Intel® Endpoint Management Assistant (EMA) and Intel® Active Management Technology (AMT) to better support remote and hybrid workforces, which was the second-most common priority for surveyed IT decision-makers in China. They also recognized that Intel vPro provides users with additional task and graphics processing power, further improving worker productivity.
  • Improving sustainable practices with regards to hardware purchases. Intel vPro’s remote management capabilities allow for fewer onsite visits and less energy consumption, lowering greenhouse gas emissions. This was a priority for 42% of Chinese respondents who sought to improve their organization’s sustainable practices by investing in Intel vPro as their endpoint standard. In comparison, only 26% of respondents from other countries who said the same.2

94% of IT decision-makers in China found that employees using Intel vPro to work remotely and in hybrid settings worked more effectively.

Intel vPro Features

The Intel vPro platform includes both high-performance Intel Core processors and several added tools and features for users and IT managers. With Intel AMT and Intel EMA, IT managers and help-desk representatives can use advanced management tools, such as enhanced remote access for managing devices and resolving issues, regardless of whether or not a person is at the device or if it is powered off.

In addition, Intel SIPP ensures application and hardware driver compatibility. This provides assurance that a new update will not lead to driver issues, which improves the rate of success for patch deployment. Intel® Hardware Shield mitigates the risk of firmware-level attacks to endpoint machines and provides advanced threat detection and application with data security.

vPro offers built-in security technologies like Intel Hardware Shield, which provides protection against firmware attacks and helps safeguard sensitive data. Furthermore, these AI-based technologies work at the hardware level, allowing security threats to be flagged even before they are detected at the operating system level. Alongside these benefits, businesses also gain access to advanced security features, such as hardware-based remote management, which enables IT teams to maintain and troubleshoot devices even when they are offline or unresponsive, thus reducing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency.

We originally went with [Intel] vPro because it defines a set of hardware standards inside the device. We knew what we were getting, and that the OEMs didn’t mess around midstream and change out any hardware. We used [Intel vPro] as a lever to make sure we knew exactly what we were getting from our OEM.”

Key Results For Chinese Organizations

To better understand the benefits, costs, and risks associated with this investment, Forrester aggregated the survey results and interviewees' experiences and combined these results into a single composite organization that is an organization with 10,000 employees and revenue of $1 billion per year. Based on the composite, the results of the investment include:

  • Reduced need for onsite support. Ninety-two percent of Chinese respondents whose organization uses Intel vPro as its endpoint standard found that it reduced onsite visits.3 Ninety-four percent found that it allowed employees to work remotely and in hybrid settings more effectively.4

Employees of the composite organization have fewer escalated issues with Intel vPro-based devices, which avoids 90% of endpoint hardware-related onsite visits from IT staff. The reduction in travel and IT staff time is worth $1 million over three years to the composite organization.
  • Improved employee effectiveness from improved hardware stability. Using Intel vPro as an endpoint standard increased employees’ performance and productivity for 88% of Chinese survey respondents.5 In addition, 84% of Chinese respondents found that Intel vPro allowed employees to experience less downtime.6

The composite organization receives value from its end-user employees having fewer hardware-related issues and having the ability to resolve remaining issues faster. This provides the composite organization with $189,000 of value over three years.
  • Easier endpoint device setup and ongoing management. IT decision-makers in China leveraged Intel vPro as an endpoint standard to reduce the labor for their IT teams. Of those surveyed, 88% found Intel vPro resulted in easier IT management and support.7 Ninety percent could qualify and deploy devices faster with Intel vPro as well.8

Chinese IT teams saved more time with Intel vPro as well. While survey respondents from other countries saved an average of 12 hours per IT member per week, Chinese respondents found their IT staff saved 14 hours each week.

IT staff within the composite organization can deploy Intel vPro-based devices 30% faster than non-Intel devices. In addition, they save 65% of their time spent on ongoing endpoint device management because Intel vPro-based devices in the composite organization have fewer hardware issues and technology that accelerates resolution. The saved IT labor provides $1.7 million in value to the composite organization over three years.
  • Fewer help desk support tickets. Eighty-four percent of survey respondents in China found that their organization had fewer support tickets because of Intel vPro.9

The help desk of the composite organization saves time with 40% fewer endpoint hardware-related tickets. The reduced tickets save the composite organization $776,000 over three years.
  • Hardware-enabled security. Survey respondents in China estimated that groups using Intel vPro as their endpoint standard experienced an average of 24% fewer security breaches than groups with non-Intel endpoints.10 In addition, 86% of these respondents found that Intel vPro helped improve stakeholder confidence due to hardware-enabled security.11

The composite organization has 23% fewer breaches and spends 35% less time on breach investigation, with 10% to 12% of this improvement attributable to Intel vPro’s hardware-enabled security in addition to other security practices enabled by Intel vPro technologies. The portion of this savings attributable to Intel vPro over three years is worth $338,000 to the composite organization.
